Devlog W06 - Halfway There!

INTRODUCTION

Congratulations ! You made it to the halfway-point of this devlog series on our very exciting Magnet Game Project (yet to be titled officially). With only 6 weeks left to finish building the game, and the same amount of time in the rear-view, this is the perfect time to take a look at our accomplishments so far. Among other things, we’ll be taking a look at our main level, HUD-related progress and THE FUTURE.

THE MAIN LEVEL

For those of you who are new : we’re making a multiplayer game about magnetic summo-wrestlers. The players get to embody antropomorphic summo-magnets and will be challenged to push and pull-eachother out of the arena. What arena, do you ask ? Let us show you.

As you can see the level is filling out nicely. Most of the main setpieces are done, with the only exception being the decorative roof that will hang above our wrestlers. Since we plan to include a nice cinematic shot of the roof in the opening of the game, this part of the environment deserves some special love and is therefore – as of now – not yet finished. Some progress was made though, as can be seen in the early render below. When all is said and done, our summo wrestlers will have the luxury of fighting in a beautiful ‘Ryōgoku Sumo Hall’-inspired arena, with a sturdy roof about their head.

RFX

Our game will be competitive and violent in nature. What better way to really portray the action than by throwing a shitload of special effects in the mix? When these magnetic wrestlers clash, sparks will fly.

Admittedly, we’ve only started working on our RFX recently and will need to do much more in the second sprint, but the effects that we already have are coming along nicely. Case in point : the bullet trail, as seen below. Did we mention the sumo wrestlers will have to dodge and deflect metal bullets, using their agility and magnetic powers ? Yeah.

UI

A game as rowdy and chaotic as ours isn’t complete with some slick UI-elements to keep the players informed of their health and stats. Luckily, we’ve got the perfect team to put together some interfaces that will fulfill their roles perfectly. This week, a lot of progress was made on the HUD. An end-of-game interface was added, and the starting screen completed. After much discussion about the designs we showed you last week, we finally settled on one. Feel free to let us know if we made the right choice !

THE FUTURE

This week marks the end of our first production sprint. This means we’re halfway through production, and that the game should (theoretically) at least be halfway finished. Our first order of business is planning out the second sprint. But first we’ll be going over our progress of the past few weeks. How much work did we get done ? Did each task take us as long as we expected ? This will help us decide if we have what it takes to finish the many tasks left ahead of us in time.  Will we have to scale back our plans? Or will we be able to add more ideas to the game?  Find out next week!

I hope everyone is as excited as we are! We are going back to developing our game. We'll be back next week for a new update!
