Devlog W02 - Prototyping!

Introduction

Hello there and welcome back at the next devlog for our Magnet Game Project!
For those who are new here, or those we need a recap ;) let me reintroduce our game!
We are creating a local multiplayer sumo game where you and your adversary are magnets! The goal of the game? Push your opponent out of the arena! (or make a bullet or a bomb launch them out of the arena)

Lots of progress has been done, and lots of progress still has to be done!
We're entering the design phase. Which means prototyping is DONE, and we are heading to finish up our technical documents before starting production!

What have we been doing the last couple of days?
Prototyping, prototyping and... MORE PROTOTYPING! We have made tons of prototypes figuring out how our game will feel.
Sketching and collecting references! The artists have been hard at work figuring out how our game will look!

Unity OR... Unreal???

So before we begin exploring the prototypes we have made over the last week. It is time to announce our final choice about the engine that the game will be made in! ... and the winner is... UNITY!

This choice has been made mainly due to the simple API which will lead to faster development time. Even though the API is simple, Unity offers many very powerful features, like the physics system, which suits our magnet mechanic very well. On top of that, Unity uses a component system, which will add to the reusability of our code. Unity is also well suited for the stylized graphic look of our game!

PROTOTYPING!

One of the most important things before you start production on a game is prototyping! And prototyping we did!
After our first simple tests from previous week trying to figure out how the main mechanic would feel, we finally made a decision on the core mechanics of our level.

The Arena

If you need a recap, last week we were deciding between a level made out of blocks, that would fall apart over time. This meant that while battling your firce opponent, you would also have to work with your adversary to rebuild the platform. The other idea was a sumo arena with one simple simple goal. Just like in a real sumo match, the goal is to push the opponent out of the arena.

Which idea won? SUMO MAGNETS!

Turrets and BOMBS have conquered the arena!

What about this week?
The past week we have been testing out different types of magnet mechanics. This means we tried to make the mechanic feel as good as possible.
Next to that, we have been testing out turrets and bombs! Look at them!!

These mechanics should spice up the game while you sumo-magnets are brawling it out in the ring.

Lets get ARTSY!

Our artists haven't been sitting still either!
They have been busy making the ART-BIBLE! This godly document will describe every little detail about the looks of our game.
While we can't show anything about this piece of work yet, we CAN share some screenshots and sketches that they have made!

JAPENESE ART!

We ALSO have made some sketches for what our HUD and UI may look like!
We've been hard at work making a main menu in the style of traditional japanese art!
Next to the main menu we also have some sketches for the HUD during the game.

Take a look!

the FUTURE

As we are figuring out the final details of the game, we are getting ready to start full production on the game NEXT WEEK!

To avoid any confusion, let me recap.
Next week: Finalising design of the game.
The week after: FULL PRODUCTION START! BRACE FOR IMPACT!

This was it for this week! Next week we will be able to give everyone a full detailed explanation of our whole game including ART!
If you're as exciting as we are, then I hope that you'll be back NEXT WEEK for the next devlog of MAGNETS! (title is under construction)

Goooobyy!
